The Best Projector for House Projection Mapping

You don't need a cinema projector to map a house — you need the right combination of brightness, throw distance and black level for an outdoor, after-dark surface. Here's what actually matters, in priority order.

1. Brightness (ANSI lumens)

This is the single biggest factor. A dark backyard with no streetlights can work with 2,500–3,000 lumens. A front-of-house facade near a lit street needs 4,000+ to keep colors from washing out.

2. Throw distance, not resolution

Check the throw ratio (distance ÷ image width) before anything else — it tells you whether the projector can even reach your facade from your porch, driveway or a tripod at the property line. 1080p is genuinely enough resolution for most house-sized facades; a longer throw at 4K is not a substitute for a shorter throw at the right brightness.

3. Contrast ratio matters more than color accuracy

Outdoor mapping lives or dies on black levels — a projector with a mediocre contrast ratio will make your "black" background look like a dim gray rectangle sitting on the house. Prioritize contrast spec over color gamut claims for this use case.

4. Keystone and lens shift are a shortcut, not a fix

Digital keystone correction and lens shift help you get a projector roughly square to a wall from an awkward angle, but they cost you sharpness at the edges. Get as close to a perpendicular, level throw as you can first, then use correction for the last few degrees — and let the mesh warp in your mapping software (see our house mapping guide) handle fitting the image to the actual window and roof geometry.

Picks by budget

  • Entry (~$500–800): A 1080p, 3,000+ lumen home-theater projector with a short-throw option if your porch or driveway is tight.
  • Mid-range (~$1,000–1,800): A laser light-source projector — laser units hold brightness longer over a multi-week holiday run and rarely need a bulb swap mid-season.
  • Multi-projector rigs: Match brightness and black level across units before worrying about matching brand — a mismatched pair is more visible than a mismatched resolution.
